It seems that Apple has made some changes today to the servers that host MobileMe email. As of this afternoon the servers in the cloud are pushing new email down to Mac OS X Mail without the need to poll the server itself.
This can be tested by setting Mail to check for new messages manually and then sending yourself a message from another account. They seem to be showing up in Mail within 3-5 seconds.
I am guessing that the MobileMe team have activated the IDLE function of IMAP on the servers (although I don’t claim to be an expert with IMAP protocols).
